Caught between a rock and a hard
place...
IT resources are the biggest cost in the typical IT budget,
and lack of money in his/her budget is a chronic concern for
the vast majority of IT managers. There is only so much you
can cut elsewhere. No matter how sophisticated your hardware
and software, you still need resources, contractors or full
time employees, to do the work.
Does any of this sound familiar?
" Some or your resources get stuck with so much of the
workload their spouses are threatening divorce, while others
sit checking their email and browsing the Internet.
" Crunches happen frequently. Not only do you have too few
resources for the workload, but the resources you have don't
have the particular skills the project needs.
" While it's like pulling teeth to get approval for hires,
layoffs are morale killers.
" HR's job descriptions for an IT resource says one thing,
what overtime, he or she ended up doing something more or
less different.
" If you don't know the potential and true skill set of a
resource, is that fair to the resource in terms of their
right to grow develop their career path? ...And how do you
know whether some training might make him or her more
productive to your IT department?
" How can you efficiently plan your IT budget or project
staffing? You may have the resources you need freeing up
money for something else. Then again, you might not.
" You may lose valuable resources along with valuable
knowledge gleaned over time, to better jobs and careers
elsewhere.
IT is charged with delivering value to business, but the
success of an IT department in delivering that value depends
on having a healthy mix of people, processes, and
technology. Processes and technology can be controlled by IT
management, but IT Workforce problems are not as easily
handled.
For IT to align itself with business strategies and goals,
the IT workforce must be better understood and proactively
managed. This can be accomplished by knowing three critical
sets of information about your IT resources.
1)
Knowing the skills and competencies of your in-house
workforce. What skills do they have? What is their
competency with respect to those skills?
