Employee Turnover
The cost of employee turnover, can be significant. Some
costs are fairly obvious and direct, i.e., hiring and
training replacements, but there are other, indirect costs,
such as lost business and lowered productivity. There are
many research white papers that discuss this topic, as well
as tools to calculate the associated costs, and suggested
ways to reverse it, available on the Internet.
Knowing What You are Looking
For
Writing a good job description can make all the difference
between a position
that sits unfilled, and one that is filled quickly. Symptoms
of a poorly written job description, are that it brings few
or no submissions, or goes unfilled for an unreasonable
period of time. There are a number of common problems that could
cause this situation, separately or in combination.
PROBLEM: Looking For the Moon
A job description may combine too many responsibilities and
skills to find in one person. In extreme situations, you may
actually be combining two totally disparate skill sets,
highly unlikely to be found in one individual. For this type
of problem, one obvious solution is to re-analyze core needs
and rewrite the job description, for two individuals if
necessary.
AVVAL offers a
guide for
writing job descriptions that uses a
3 step process, with a
comprehensive
6 point check list of important content
details to help you create a job description that will get
results.
PROBLEM: Money
Another problem in filling a position could be that the salary range being offered
is out of line with the market rates for the type of
position and skills, or that the position has attributes
such that it requires a greater monetary incentive.
