The
more people you know, the more opportunities you have
available.
Successful people maintain networks inside and outside their
companies and fields of expertise, because networks provide
information, support and opportunities.
It’s never too late to start to build a network. Ways to
network include joining professional organizations and
clubs, attending business events or classes, or
volunteering.
Think strategically, and concentrate on developing a small
network of people with whom you can develop mutually
beneficial relationships; and be ready to give as well as
take. Always be ready to help your friends and colleagues.
You may need their help one day, yourself.
Your network should include peers and leaders within your
profession and industry, who can introduce you to new ideas
and opportunities.
Job-hunting is an excellent way to develop networking
contacts. Use all methods as appropriate. Employ methods
both verbal (phone) and written (letters - snail-mail,
email, or fax).
A
well-written thank you letter can help you stand out from
others.
It’s difficult to respond to "no further interest,"
non-selection, or “we’ll keep your resume on file for the
future” letters, but don’t ignore this opportunity to make a
good impression and to network. |
